Located in one of the most beautiful Canadian landscapes, the design of this custom house blends perfectly with the site and connects all the interior spaces with the exterior, providing them with unobstructed views of the ocean.
Our clients engaged us to design their dream home. As Newfoundland natives, they plans on retiring and returning to their hometown in the next few years. This project has always been one of their greatest ambitions and our team fully understood how important this home would be.Â

Challenges
The house is located in Chapel Arm, NL, and sits in a significantly sloped site towards the water. The main challenge was to design a unique home that would adapt to the geography and maximize views of the ocean.
Solution
To take full advantage of the views and the solar exposure, the layout is developed in an L shape, separating the private and public areas of the house in individual wings.Â
The house is divided into two levels. The entrance is recessed under the second level’s projection, leading toward the foyer that acts as the transition space between the private and public areas of the house.
The material selection was based on the local building traditions and vernacular architecture with a focus on wood, stone, and metal to create a design that is both iconic and timeless.

Our goal was to create a residence that harmoniously blends with the natural surroundings, appearing as though it has always been part of the landscape.
