16 Servington Crescent reimagines an established Toronto house as a cohesive contemporary family home. By preserving its familiar street presence while transforming the interior, rear elevation, third storey and landscape, the design balances architectural continuity with bold renewal.
Challenges
The house required comprehensive intervention. Its poorly configured interiors no longer supported contemporary family life, while the existing third storey felt disconnected from the original architecture. The challenge was to create significantly more space, light and functionality without overwhelming the house or compromising the character of the streetscape.
Solution
The original red-brick front façade and much of the side masonry are retained and restored, anchoring the transformation in the identity of the existing home. Behind them, the interior is completely reconstructed and the foundation underpinned to improve ceiling heights, circulation and long-term performance.
A new rear addition opens the living spaces to the garden through generous dark-framed glazing, while a full-length third-storey dormer creates a spacious primary suite with views toward the city. Cedar fish-scale shingles give the rear intervention a distinct contemporary expression while relating naturally to the scale and texture of the original house.
The existing garage is being transformed into a garden studio, extending the project beyond the main residence. A coordinated landscape design brings the house, studio and outdoor spaces together through new planting, terraces, walkways and gathering areas.
The result is a complete transformation of the property—preserving the character of the house from the street while creating an entirely new experience of contemporary living behind it.
